THREE NOVELS and AN AUTHOR |
| Ayşenur İSLAM |
| ABSTRACT This study aims to analyse the common aspects of Faik Baysal’s novels Sarduvan (1944), Rezil Dünya (1957), and Voli (1997 in terms of setting, time, plot structure, characterisation, and theme. All three novels revolve around two main
conflicts, one is psychological, the other is sociological. The psychological conflict
develops as a result of the clash between the inner desires of the characers and the
circumstances in which they find themselves. The sociological conflict arises from the
dilemma between social justice and injustice. These conflicts are explored within a
tripartite plot-structure, composed of an exposition, an encounter, and a conflict. The
common themes in the novels can be classified under the major headings of social
injustice, conflict of values, sexual problems, and escapism. In the first two novels,
setting is used as a significant indicator of the main conflict. In all three novels, time
lends itself to analysis under two categories: the duration of the action, and the
duration of the telling, which gives significant clues as to the internal development of
the characters. The characters can be analysed as major and minor characters in terms of
their functions within the plot. They can also be classified in terms of the types they
represent, such as the tramp, the corrupt individual, and the female. |
