TURKISH TRANSLATIONS OF SA’DÎ-Ý ÞÎRÂZÎ’S GULÝSTÂN

ABSTRACT

Sa’dî-i Þîrâzî is one of the most popular and important figures of Iranian (Persian) Literature and honestly had made a career in the world literature. Gulistan is one of his most famous works and contains some moral stories. This work has been read by most of the intellectual people, especially sunni muslims, with appreciation and joy since it was written. Until early 20th century it had been used as a coursebook to teach Persian language and literature in medreses of various Islamic countries and also was translated in many languages. Poems, sprinkled among stories were written in a beatiful style which couldn’t be imitated for centuries, were authentic for both literature and their language and words used. Rare words, terms and witticisms in it are not easy to understand for both foreigners and Iranians. This difficulty occurs mostly for foreigners. Because of this, a lot of translations of Gulistan and explanations on it had been written in the past. In this study, first dwelled on Gulistan, then on its translations and explanations, its nazires in Persian language and glossaries (dictionaries) written for Gulistan
