ABSTRACT

This study is concerned with the copula -miş deriving from the imiş (inferential) in terms of its usage in Turkish dialects of Cyprus. The material that was employed has been obtained from everyday speech and from a study based on the speech of high school students. Here two qualities of the imiş (copula) have been concentrated upon: its syntax and function. It concludes that the imiş (copula) can be used in various positions within a sentence, and that it is not necessarily used after the predicate. Furthermore, it is proved through various examples that the imiş, following other components of the sentence, occurs mainly in order to emphasize information important or new - i.e. rheme - within the sentence.
