REFLECTIONS OF THE MOUNTAIN CULT,
CULT AND FESTIVAL OF SAINTS IN MUĞLA

Assis. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Naci ÖNAL

ABSTRACT

Believes around the mountain cult are seen in many areas in the world. In Muğla the traditions related to the mountain cult are still alive. Believes and rituals from the pre-Islamic period continued after Islam. The cult of saints replaced the mountain cult in many areas. The tombs of these saints are on mountain summits. The traditions around the tomb of Çiçek Baba on the Sandraz Mountain in Muğla are still alive. The time of the ceremonies changes from one region to another. In some regions these ceremonies are performed during summer and autumn; in other regions they are carried out up to eight times a year. These festivals have the remnants of the old Turkish religion.
