THE PLACE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF ULUG BEY ZICI IN THE STUDIES OF OTTOMAN ASTRONOMY

ABSTRACT

     Uluğ Bey Zici, prepared by Sultan Uluğ Bey and famous astronomers in Semerkand observatory, is one of the significant works of the history of Islamic astronomy. In this paper, after touching on the life of Uluğ Bey in brief, the importance of Zic and its entering to Ottoman territory is mentioned. Then, it is emphasized on its Arabic and Turkish translations. In the last part that undertakes various works on Zic in Islamic world, it is indicated the libraries having the editions of Zic in the form of handwritten manuscript. This paper draws attention to the significance of Uluğ Bey Zici, its prevalence and the abundance of various works on this book produced in different countries.
