THE 1929 WORLD ECONOMIC CRISIS AND TRANSITION TO
ETATISM IN TURKEY

ABSTRACT


      The principles of the economic policy which applied during the early years of establishing process of the Republic of Turkey were shaped in the first Economic Congress in Ýzmir in 1923. This economic policy can be described as 'liberal' and was followed until the beginning of the 1930's. A new economic policy appeared in the new Republic during the 1930s. The state began to play an important role in the economy by following an 'etatist' economic policy. This article focuses on the internal and external dynamics of carrying out the etatist practices in Turkey during the period concerned. The main reasons of the etatistic economic applications are discussed, and the consequences are evaluated.
