SOME PHONOLOGIC FEATURES OF THE 18TH (EIGHTEENTH) CENTURY TURKISH ACCORDING TO HALEPLI EDĪB DĪVĀN

ABSTRACT

        The pronunciation of classical Ottoman Turkish texts is a controversial issue since the cliched spelling did not reflect the changes that took place in language. A number of studies based on foreign publications in Latin script and some exceptional clichéd misspellings have been conducted to account for the phonetic features of the period. The study is an attempt to characterise some 18th century phonetic features, based on the of use of cinas (= homophonic ryming) in Halepli Edīb Dīvān. Key Words:
