NOUNS AND ADJECTIVES IN SOUTH SIBERIAN TURKIC

ABSTRACT

        This study will examine word class distinction and especially noun versus adjective classification in Turkic. The semantic and pragmatic, as well as the prototype theory approaches will be discussed in relation to these two word classes; the typological and the semantic distinctions between noun and adjective classes will be determined through distinctive properties. The aim of this research is to present that adjectives may function as nouns by way of markerless nominalization process, whereas nouns do not occur as adjectives. The examples provided in this research will also present material from historical and modern Turkish, although the examples will mainly be collected from South Siberian Turkish languages.
