Kemalist Texts in the Period of Atatürk: A Kemalizm at Purgatory: Tekin Alp and Kemalizm

Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet ÖZDEN

Abstract: Kemalizm is the formal name of Turkish rebuplicanism which attributes a special role to its founder, Mustafa Kemal. 1930's witnesses transformation of this special role into an ideological text. At the third congress of CHP assembled in 1931 Kemalizm was revealed as a sum of principles known as the six arrows. One year later Kadro started being published in order to give an ideological form to Kemalizm. In addition to these institutional efforts for the purpose of explanation and defence of Kemalizm some other books were written and published by various writers. “Kemalizm” was one of those books distinguished from the others by being the first one published under this title . It was written by Tekin Alp. He was born in Serez at 1883 as a Ottoman Jew and named as Moiz Kohen. Later in his life, he made friends among the circles of CUP (Committee of Union and Progress) including Ziya Gökalp. This relationship influenced all his life. Likewise the Turkification of Moiz Kohen by transforming into Tekin Alp was precedent of this influence. In the second constitutional monarchy period (1908-1918)Tekin Alp supported Turkism intellectually. But in the period starting with the proclamation of Republic he assumed a kemalist identity. Publication of “Kemalizm” should be considered as a reflection of this identity. “Kemalizm” (Ýstanbul 1936) is an important book from different points. Firstly it has a conjectural value; secondly it reflects the atmosphere of its era; and finally it quotes the discussions about Kemalism. Besides, the arguments Tekin Alp put forward about nationalism, liberalism and secularism make it possible to for us comment on Kemalist ideology of the time.
